May is Military Appreciation Month, and in the words of John F. Kennedy, “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.”
Memorial Day has been around since 1866 and first formalized in 1868 as it was called Decoration Day. This is because people decorated the graves of the people who died in the civil war. During World War I the idea to honor the dead of all of our wars was taking hold. It wasn’t until Memorial Day was passed in the US Congress in 1968 and it became effective in 1971 declared as a federal holiday and placed on the last Monday in May, that it became what it is today.
We honor all of those whose served and can never forget those who gave the ultimate sacrifice, who gave their life for our country and our freedoms. As you enjoy your various Memorial Day festivities this month, I hope you will join us in pausing to reflect on the sacrifices of our country’s veterans and their families.
At Hill County Electric (HCE), we are grateful to have veterans working for us, and we are proud to serve veterans and their families within our communities. As we pause on Memorial Day to remember that for those who served, “all gave some and some gave all”, the month of May also holds several other important anniversaries and events. Including Military Appreciation month, our National Day of Prayer, VE Day, Military Spouse Appreciation Day, Mother’s Day, Armed Forces Week, Armed Forces Day and of course Memorial Day.
Please join us in taking a moment to show your appreciation to a veteran – not just this month, but every month and pray for the families of those who lost loved ones and also for those that are still in harm’s way on our behalf.
I also want to remind everyone that our annual meeting is Saturday, May 13 at the MSU-N Student Union Building, hope to see you there and if you can’t make it, please vote by mail!
Semper Fidelis, and always stay safe and stay healthy!
